If you've never shopped for a newborn before, the baby aisle is overwhelming. Three hundred kinds of bibs. Twelve different "essential" creams. The truth is most new parents are drowning in stuff they don't need, and quietly grateful for the things that just work. Here's what we've learned.
What new parents actually want
Soft, plain bodysuits, in the next size up
Newborns grow fast. By month two, the newborn-size bodysuits the parents already have are tight. A pack of 3,6 month bodysuits in plain colours gets daily use for weeks.
A really good blanket
One soft, breathable blanket is more useful than three cheap ones. It becomes the swaddle, the pram cover, the changing-mat liner, the spit-up shield.
A set, not single pieces
A coordinated bodysuit-leggings-bib trio looks generous and gets worn together.
A gift card
This isn't lazy, it's smart. New parents know their baby's actual size, what they're missing, and what their friend already bought. Pair it with a small physical piece (a soft hat or socks) so the moment of opening still feels like a gift.
What new parents don't actually want
- Newborn-size clothing. Often never worn. Always size up.
- Sleep accessories. Sleep regulations are strict; skip pillows, bumpers, and blankets-for-cribs unless requested.
- Strongly scented products. Babies' skin is sensitive and parents become hyper-aware of smells.
- Anything that requires charging or cleaning a complicated piece.
- Plush toys in volume. One beautiful, machine-washable plush is more loved than five.
How to choose sizes
Single rule: buy ahead, not for now.
- For a baby shower (birth still months away): 3-6 months in winter clothes if the baby is due in summer.
- For a newborn (already born): 6 months or 6-12 months.
- For a milestone: One size up from current.
